We have all experienced the downfalls of slow and unstable WiFi. It’s frustrating, to say the least, when we are trying to stream our favorite content and experience delays. Strong WiFi is vital, especially in this day and age when we rely on our WiFi connections for so many of our home devices, like security cameras, locks, and baby monitors. Not to mention, as more and more work places allow employees to work from home, networks need to be able to keep up with the demands of accessing and transferring large files and using video conferencing tools.

NETGEAR has been a leader in the WiFi industry for well over 20 years. And in more recent years, NETGEAR Orbi™ has been a top contender among Mesh WiFi Systems, being called “the Mesh router to beat” by Tom’s Guide, the “best mesh router choice” by Wirecutter, and the “top pick” by PC Mag, as well as being named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2018.

NETGEAR is now very excited about the arrival of our newest addition to our family of Orbi™ products, the Orbi™ WiFi 6. With 12 WiFi 6 streams providing more speed and more coverage, Orbi WiFi 6 is the ideal product for the gigabit home, and is the biggest revolution in WiFi ever.

However, if the Orbi has been so popular in solving our WiFi woes, why did NETGEAR find the need to take it even a step further and add WiFi 6? Let us explain.

What is WiFi 6?

WiFi 6, also known as 802.11ax, is the latest generation of the WiFi standard. The previous version, known as WiFi 5, or 802.11ac, has been around since 2013, when the average home only had a handful of WiFi devices, before the rise of the Smart Home, before voice assistants like Amazon Alexa were released and before cord cutting was a thing.  We have been overdue for a refresh of WiFi to address today and tomorrow’s challenges in terms of number of devices, in an always-connected universe.

You can read more about the history and future of WiFi here.

Here are some more details about the specific benefits of moving to WiFi 6:

OFDMA

WiFi 6 uses uplink and downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (or OFDMA), which allows routers to send data to multiple devices at the same time, rather than one at a time.  This significantly helps in reducing latency for applications like gaming, voice, and video.  You can read more about OFDMA here.

1024-QAM

QAM defines how many bits you can stuff into a channel, and WiFi 6 has quadrupled that amount from WiFi 5 (256 QAM to 1024 QAM).  This results in increased speed, especially in close range.

Target Wake Time (TWT)

TWT improves battery life in WiFi 6 devices because instead of randomly waking up to see if there is traffic, TWT schedules a wake up time allowing them to stay dormant for longer.

Orbi WiFi 6

WiFi 6 provides a better experience and supports more clients, even in very dense environments. This will improve the experience of living or working in a modern smart home or office. WiFi 6 is also backwards compatible with previous generations of WiFi, which means you can have a WiFi 6 router, and still use all of your earlier WiFi devices and technologies.

The new Orbi WiFi 6 is truly the best WiFi you are going to experience in a multi-gigabit home setting. It gives you the capacity to virtually stream and surf more than ever before.

With Orbi WiFi 6, you can connect and run more devices without impacting speed or reliability, delivering the fastest WiFi to all of your connected devices. NETGEAR uses our patented tri-band mesh technology with a dedicated backhaul, to provide the ultimate smart home experience with seamless roaming. With Orbi WiFi 6, you will get 4 times the capacity and a 40% increase in data throughput than our award-winning blazing fast Orbi RBK50.

Are there WiFi 6 clients on the market?

WiFi 6 is a very new and advanced technology, with NETGEAR being the first company to release a broad portfolio of WiFi 6 routers. And now, we are already seeing WiFi 6 client devices make their way to the market.

In fact, Apple just announced that all models of their latest iPhone, the iPhone 11, supports WiFi 6.  And earlier this year, Samsung had already released their Galaxy S10 mobile phone with WiFi 6 capabilities. There are also several laptops and adaptors on the market already which support WiFi 6, with more on the way.

Orbi WiFi 6 joins the rest of our NETGEAR portfolio of WiFi 6 routers and extenders, including the award winning AX12 WiFi 6 Router, available now, and our Nighthawk AX8 8-Stream WiFi 6 Mesh Extender.
