September is National Preparedness Month in the United States, and over the past several weeks, details of the massive destruction caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma have been inundating news headlines. Wreaking havoc over the southern states, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean, these monster storms have triggered widespread power outages and severe flooding and damage on a scale that is setting new records. With Irma going down in history as the longest lasting hurricane ever recorded worldwide, it is certainly an appropriate time to pause and consider whether you have taken steps to prepare for the next act of nature to land on your doorstep.

If disaster strikes, preparedness could be the critical key to your family’s safety. To begin putting together your emergency plan, FEMA suggests you do the following:
- Step 1: To begin, discuss important questions with your family, neighbors, friends, or household to start your emergency plan, such as shelter options and evacuation routes.
- Step 2: Consider specific needs in your household, such as different medical and dietary needs, as well as the needs of your pets. Very importantly, be sure to be prepare an emergency supply kit with food and water for each member of your household for at least three days, details of which you can find here.
- Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan.
- Step 4: Be sure to practice your plan with your household members.
Please take the time this month to ensure you have prepared your household. If you would like to help those displaced by the recent hurricanes, please consider donating to the American Red Cross, or another of the many charities that are accepting donations in efforts to assist and rebuild.
From our team at NETGEAR, we hope that you and your family stay safe, and wish all those affected by the recent storms a speedy recovery.
